Bookstart Bear's lazy day in the park
I spent this May Day weekend doing my favourite thing in the whole world. It was a glorious sunny day and the birds were chirping and the tree outside my bedroom window was in blossom. It was a clear blue sky. So I packed up a lovely picnic and some books and headed to Richmond Park, near the rugby pitches, to read and eat in the sun - which is my favourite thing in the world to do.
While I drank tea from my special Goldilocks and the Three Bears Thermos, I read a book of nursery rhymes to myself. Before I knew what was happening, I was surrounded by parents and children, all sitting next to my picnic blanket, smiling and listening. I had been reading the nursery rhymes out aloud and I hadn't even realised! I asked the children what their favourite nursery rhymes were and one by one, we all sang them together. My favourite was definitely Twinkle Twinkle Little Star. Oh, and Baa Baa Black Sleep. Wait, I forgot Incy Wincy Spider. Oh I just can't choose what my favourite nursery rhyme is! I love them all. What are your favourites? Do let me know. Maybe your favourite nursery rhyme is in another language or from another country? I would love to learn the words if it is. Maybe you can record an mp3 of your favourite nursery rhyme and email it to my friend Nikesh@booktrust.org.uk and he can put it up on the website.
So that's my favourite thing to do in summer: sit outside with a lovely picnic of sandwiches, bhajis, humous, vegetables and tea, and read.
