Bookstart and Diversity

Bookstart is for every child

Celebrating Diversity

Every child should enjoy books, so Bookstart works to ensure that materials reflect a diverse and inclusive society and are enjoyable and informative for all.

The standard Bookstart packs are available to all children but we believe that we should do more to promote social inclusion and foster a love of books for every child. We encourage publishers to produce more books that support a diverse range of needs and show positive images of disability and diversity. Scope, National Deaf Children’s Society, RNIB, Mencap and other charities use their communication channels to raise awareness and share the Bookstart messages. We are advised by their expertise.

Supporting families with additional needs

We know that some children may benefit from certain types of books, and parents and carers welcome additional advice and resources to support their child’s needs. We've produced the following two resources for download:

  • Finding Books to Suit Different Needs (PDF)– helps parents and professionals to identify different types of books that might be particularly relevant to a child’s specific needs
  • Finding Inclusive Books (PDF) – features 25 titles reflecting positive images of disability, and has proven popular with libraries, children’s centres and booksellers.
