The Bookstart Bear goes to a party!
Posted Thursday August 12th 2010
by The Bookstart BearHave you ever been to a birthday party? I was lucky enough to go to my first one this weekend…
It all started with an invitation arriving through the post. It was in a special colourful envelope, and it said:
‘Dear Bookstart Bear, You are specially invited to Honey Bear's 3rd birthday party, on Saturday at 2pm. Hope to see you there.’
Well I hoped to be there too! My very first party! I didn’t know what exactly happened at parties but I knew that they were supposed to be very fun, so I decided to do what I always do when I’m not sure about something – to look it up in a book.
At the library I found lots of books about birthday parties, but I think my favourite one was Party Animals by Tony Mitton. It was really colourful and all the rhyming was so fun that I almost felt that I was at the party already! I also enjoyed I Am Invited to a Party by Mo Willems and Kipper’s Birthday by Mick Inkpen.
I read all about party games and birthday cake and even party bags, so by the time that Saturday…

A walk in the park for the Bookstart Bear

I have been having a wonderful time strolling in the park and looking at all the summery things around me.
Have you seen all those brightly coloured flowers out at the moment? Some of them smell delicious. I put my nose right inside one particularly vibrant flower and inhaled deeply. Can you guess what happened next? Atiiiichhooo!! I did a sneeze so big that all the petals from the flower blew away. Oh dear, what a silly bear.
As I used my extremely large hanky it suddenly occurred to me that I could grow my own flower. When I got home I decided on a sunflower. In my humble bear’s opinion, I think they are the finest flower around and yellow is my absolute favourite colour.
I wasn’t quite sure how to look after my flower so I asked my trusty friend Gerty, the gardener for some advice. She told me that sunflowers are happiest in sunny spots in the garden and that more importantly I need to water it every day so it will grow and grow and grow, maybe even as tall as me!
At the moment my sunflower is only a seed so whilst waiting for it…

We celebrated National Bookstart Day in June this year and I had a great time at so many wonderful events.
I was up and down the country so often that my head was in a real tizz – I was glad for a sit down afterwards, I can tell you.
I featured at so many places all around – from Stoke to Solihull, from London to Northern Ireland.
Take a look at some of my favourite photos below.
I hope you got to attend one of the many Bookstart events near you. If you did, let me know how you got on below and leave a comment!

I had a great day out recently when I went to the seaside at Weston-Super-Mare.
I brought with me all the things you need for a super time by the sea.
Deckchairs.
My favourite toys.
A picnic blanket (I had a yummy picnic on the beach).
My lovely Bookstart packs with wonderful books.
And of course lots of friends to share them with!
Take a look at my seaside snaps:
I'm really looking forward to going back to the seaside for the many events that are taking place around the country in June for National Bookstart Day. I can't wait - maybe I'll see you there?!

Easter Chicks
Posted Thursday April 1st 2010

Walking through the park this morning, I saw something very exciting… by the pond, next to the ducks and the geese, was a very small, very fluffy and very yellow… CHICK!
It was very cute waddling along next to its mummy.
And when I see a chick I know that that means it’s definitely spring! So I rushed home and ran upstairs to my bookshelf to find all my favourite spring books about all my favourite spring-like things. And do you know, I had two books about chicks!
My favourite one is Chick by Ed Vere. I love all the bright colours and the pop-up bits… as soon as I get to the end I turn back to the beginning to start all over again! I also found The Odd Egg by Emily Gravett – it made me wonder what else can come out of eggs!
But I think my favourite kind of egg of all is the extra special easter kind… chocolate! I wonder if chicks like chocolate too…
